Color Problem A: Grayscale Ladder

I painted my grayscale ladder in all it's complexity about eight times, and mixed & matched the best tones I could create. The magazine articles were switched out equally as much, and the end result does not show up on the screen well, but in person the steps are noticeable.

Creating texture with typography was easier than I imagined, and I really got into the details of each font type, size, spacing, color, and specifically attempting to make sense of the content of the stories wherever possible.

I used a poetry style typography approach to describe three different physical textures as detailed as possible.

I have always preferred handwriting and hand drawing all of my ideas and artwork for myself, although starting Graphic Design classes I suddenly have an urgent desire to improve the look of my text and illustrations to help translate my ideas to other people. 

This page begins my sketchbook, and physical journey into the world of planning and executing all of my Graphic Design ideas.

Sketching my notes with a visual hierarchy of information has always helped with my memorization of important points.

I am looking forward to filling many sketchbooks with my ideas, and reflecting on the
improvement of my illustration and typography skills. 

Visual Principles Problem B: Point, Line & Plane Exercise

VISUAL PRINCIPLES: POINT

My first Visual Principle exercise was POINTS, and with the themes of symmetry and emphasis, I naturally began to create childhood illustrations, which helped move my mind from the academic structure into a more imaginative and abstract place to translate.

       

VISUAL PRINCIPLES: LINE

The LINES exercises presented a challenge in variety, as there is truly only one way to present a straight line. 

Angles play an important role in giving movement to lines, and repetition begins to play eye games for an added effect.

VISUAL PRINCIPLES: PLANE

Finally I reached the most challenging Visual Principles exercise, PLANE. There are too many shape options with not enough objects allowed to use, and actually this ended up being the most rewarding outtake from the entire process. Challenge accepted.

This specific page allowed me to give personality to simple shapes. Not only are they conveying the emotional message, but the organic relationship of the shapes took on a story of their own, beyond what I intended them to display.

This last page has a harmony that I am especially drawn to, and I hope to use some of these designs in future projects.

Visual Principles Problem A: Individual Observation Project "LINE"

These ten photographs represent "lines" that I observe in my everyday life. They are strong, soft, angled, swirled, shiny, pink, plastic, natural, repetitive, random, organic, and grided. Lines give us perspective and borders. They are beautiful and infinitely functional.
